The post-Soviet Latvian Air Force was formed on 24 February 1992 at Spilve Airport.
In August 1994 the air force moved to the ex-Soviet Lielvārde Air Base.
After independence restoration in 1990 the Aviation Center “Spilve” was used as a private flight and parachute training airport. In 2001 the airport terminal building was used by Latvian New Theatre Institute for the show "Thirsty Birds" and festival "Homo Novus" final event. In 2002 Riga City Council Property Department leased Spilve airport building for 25 years to SIA Baltic Project Office.
